Periodontal Maintenance at The Dental Emergency Room
Periodontal disease or disease “around the tooth”, affects the gums and the bone to which a tooth is attached. It is an advanced bacterial infection that causes tooth loss and gum recession and is preceded by gingivitis. Symptoms can include bleeding from the gums, bone loss that displays itself on an X-ray, excessive tooth mobility, or gum recession.
Some of the symptoms of gum disease include but are not limited to:
- Red, swollen or tender gums
- Gums that bleed easily
- Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
- Persistent bad breath or bad taste
- Teeth that are loose, separating or changing position
Because of the overall threat to the health of the tooth, periodontitis requires a more advanced care routine than is given during a Prophylaxis (tooth cleaning). What happens during a “regular” teeth cleaning is the hygienist removes plaque and tartar from all visible teeth surfaces as well as in between the teeth. Additionally, the hygienist will remove any plaque that is irritating the gums. There is no additional work that needs to be done because the patient has healthy gum tissue.
During a periodontal maintenance the hygienist performs the same services as regular teeth cleaning and then they take it a few steps further. by removing plaque from “pockets” created by the gum disease. The pocket is formed between the gums and the tooth and collects excess amounts of plaque that can only be removed by a dental professional. These pockets are not visible to the naked eye and require extra time and skill to clean.
A periodontal maintenance is suggested to be performed every 3-4 months on patients with gums disease after they receive a deep cleaning, also known as scaling & root planning. The reason for this is because scientific studies show that the bacteria that causes gum disease returns after about 12 weeks.
Understanding the difference between these two procedures and applying them properly will enhance the care we provide for our patients, and that is what it is always about.

This clinic is awesome. Dr. Alkabbani is really nice, and took his time to thoroughly explained the root canal procedure I needed beforehand. The hygienists and office staff were very helpful and kind too. It was great to be seen right away, and the root canal was significantly cheaper than the seven other specialists I called. I will definitely come back, and will recommend Dr. Alkabanni to my friends. Thanks!
This place is wonderful. I cracked a tooth and had to get a root canal. Their prices were the same as my other dentist except I only had to wait a few days for an appointment instead of a few weeks! The procedure was painless and the Dr. Alkabbani was very pleasant. The staff was super helpful and even set up a payment plan with me since I couldn't afford the cost of the root canal up front. My new crown looks and fits so well no one can tell its fake! I will definitely continue coming here for my dental work.
I highly recommend The Dental Emergency Room! The professionalism of the staff, and the atmosphere are few of the many reasons that makes me a frequent patient here. I have already suggested this dental office to a few family and friends. I typically schedule online appointments on their website, and the process is super easy. I am always able to get an appointment time that is convenient for me, as I have a busy work schedule. I always receive awesome dental work here. As a current patient, I suggest that you check them out! You wont regret it.
They always make me feel like I'm special.. I love Dr. Alkabbani & his Staff! I recommend Dental Emergency 2 Young & Older
This review coming from a person with Zero previous dental work, aside from regular cleaning. Professional, kind people. Got in at 9am left at 11. The paperwork took more time than the actual procedure. Had two bottom wisdom teeth pulled. Nervous as hell but made the process better. Many thanks for the great experience.
Absolutely the best of an unhappy experience. Let's face it. No one really "likes" going to the dentist. But new to town, a few weeks ago I chipped 2 teeth & they got me in right away were so nice and affordable. So I went there today for a long needed root canal & I was so pleased. They again were AMAZING. Id definitely recommend this clinic to anyone who would listen! Thank you to the Staff & Doctors!
I went in on a Saturday expecting to wait forever. I was so impressed with the service I got. It took me longer to fill out the paperwork then it did for them to see me. Everyone was so professional and friendly, and they only charged for what was done. No hidden fees, or er extras. I will absolutely refer people here. I am going to become a regular patient myself, and I live about 3 hours away from them. Hands down the best dentist I have been to in a lot of years. Thank you guys so much.....
Without question this is the best dental clinic I have ever been to. They were nice, fast and very knowledgeable. I got 3 wisdom teeth pulled in no time at all with no pain! I couldn't believe it. They even let me look at them when it was all over. Five stars team, really good work!
Was able to get it quickly for an infected tooth that had kept me up all night. Loved the transparency before my exam. Hygienist was prompt and friendly, knew what she was doing! The doctor talked me through what could happen that day and what my options were down the road. When I got anxious during the extraction, they were both so kind and reassured me that everything was going normally and nothing was wrong. Would give 5 stars, but I'm not done recovering so I wanna wait and make sure. No regrets and thanks so much!
Muy buenos dentistas selos recomiendo...
This place is very good!!!! I was a walk in so it took a lil longer than a apt. But I was able to call and walk in. They are all very nice. Got a wisdom tooth took out same Day. It was fast and little pain. The DRS ARE NICE AND DONT SCOLD YOU. I needed a stronger pain pill for my pain and called after hours. The DR let me stop by after hours to get a new prescription. But no pharmacy had the stuff he wrote for me. So I called back and get this. THE DR DROVE TO MY NEIGHBORHOOD AND MEET ME AT A PHARMACY AND GAVE ME A DIFFERENT PRESCRIPTION!!!! Who knows a dr that will do that!!!!!! This place is great. I will be having them do the rest of my dental work. I actually look forward TO going back!!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE!!!!!!!
Twice now we've needed their services, and twice they have come through with outstanding results. I'd absolutely highly recommend them to anyone having any dental emergencies, or even just needing a new dentist.
Dr. Alkabbani is a great dentist. He's very thorough and respectful. His dental assistant, Ashley, is wonderful and they both make me feel good about coming in. The front desk clerk is very friendly and helpful. The dental work is always great. And I hope to continue having my dental work done here.
Excellent service, reasonable prices. Dr. Alkabbani is kind and patient.
AWESOME!!! I was so impressed by the staff and service, I will absolutely refer everyone I know to them. Went in on a Saturday as a walk-in with a broken tooth expecting to be there all day. In and out in less then 2 hours, and no hidden fees or charges. I live about 3 hours away, and have decided to become a regular patient. That's how impressed I was, and to be honest. I'm not a big fan of dentists.... Loved it here, thank you again guys.....
Great staff and service! Was able to get in within an hour of calling and the dentist was super kind and great to work with!
